Meet our Leadership Team

Symbio is a founder-led company. Our Board of Directors and Executive team have significant management experience gained across technology, software and telecom.

Michael Boorne

Non-Executive Director

Mr Boorne is a serial entrepreneur, combining extensive technical expertise with deep commercial and corporate experience.

Michael has founded start-up businesses such as Sprit Modems and Mitron Pty Ltd, and is a director and committee member of numerous private companies and charitable foundations. He was previously a non-executive director of Netcomm Ltd.

Andy Fung

Non-Executive Director

Mr Fung is a co-founder of Symbio. He was Managing Director of Symbio (formerly MNF Group) from 2006 until 2012. Mr Fung previously held senior management positions with Telstra, Optus and Lucent Technologies of the US.

During his time in Telstra, Mr Fung was seconded to the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) as Specialist Trade Commissioner and supported Australian exports to countries in Asia. Mr Fung is also an Executive Director of a private company with interests in trade and investments.

Gail Pemberton

Non-Executive Director

Ms Pemberton’s career as an executive focused on technology, technology intensive businesses and financial services in a variety of C-level roles.

Since transitioning to a Non-Executive Director career, Gail has amassed extensive experience as a Chair and as a Director of both ASX listed and global companies and has participated in several IPOs, acquisitions, divestments and capital raisings.

David Stewart

Non-Executive Director

Mr Stewart is an experienced CEO and successful entrepreneur with more than 30 years in management and business leadership roles.

David has extensive experience in the ICT industry and has been recognised for his significant and valuable contribution to the Australian communications industry with the presentation of the Communications Ambassador 2016 award.

Rene Sugo

Executive Director & CEO

Mr Sugo is the current CEO and the co-founder of Symbio.

During his tenure as CEO, Symbio has grown to become Australia’s largest IP Voice network and established its reputation for innovation and technical capability on the global stage.

Anne Ward

Chair & Non-Executive Director

Anne is a highly experienced company director with a focus on growth strategies in rapidly changing, highly regulated and customer focussed businesses. Prior to becoming a professional director, Anne was a commercial lawyer for 28 years.

She is currently Chairman of RedBubble Ltd and a Director of the Foundation for Imaging Research amongst other roles.

John Boesen

Chief Technology Officer

John Boesen was appointed in June 2018 as Chief Technology Officer of Symbio to transform the technology team and lead the modernisation of the technology stack to drive the business’s next phase of growth, focused on global expansion of its voice network and software platforms.

John has led multi-disciplinary technology and creative teams over the past 20 years at executive and senior management levels, previously serving as the Chief Information Officer and prior Chief Technology Officer of William Hill Australia, as well as the Chief Operating Officer of Etherstack plc.

A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), John also holds a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of New South Wales.

Jon Cleaver

Chief Executive - Wholesale

Jon Cleaver was appointed Chief Executive – Wholesale in November 2019. In this role, he is responsible for all wholesale domestic and global businesses and is leading the company’s expansion into new countries and executing Symbio’s four-dimensional growth strategy.

Jon previously headed up the Sales and Business Development teams, before serving as the Chief Commercial Officer, leading the Sales, Products, Carrier and Regulatory teams. In this, role Jon was responsible for integrating the acquisitions of iBoss, TNZI and Telcoinabox, the expansion into NZ and Singapore markets.

Having been at the forefront of the industry for over 15 years, at both executive and senior management level, Jon was previously a Senior Account Manager at Telstra Wholesale before joining Symbio.

Cathy Doyle

Chief People Experience Officer

Cathy Doyle was appointed as Chief People Experience Officer of Symbio in June 2021 to design and implement the people strategy to enable our ambitious goals, ensuring that each Symbio employee continues to thrive. As we get ready for the next stage of our growth, our people are vital to enabling the success of Symbio’s continued expansion

Cathy brings a wealth of experience to her role, possessing over 25 years of experience in holding senior People and Culture roles in companies such as ParaFlare, Rabobank Australia and NZ, McDonalds Australia, BNP Paribas, CBA and Qantas, amongst others.

A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) and the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST), Cathy also holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree, a Certificate in Governance, Graduate Diploma qualifications in Psychology and Vocational Education & Training and an MBA.

Iain Falshaw

Chief Executive - Direct

Iain Falshaw joined Symbio as part of the Telecoinabox acquisition in December 2018, initially assisting with the integration into Symbio and then being appointed as Chief Executive – Direct in November 2019. Iain is responsible for direct customers across the Enterprise and Express Virtual Meetings brands.

He has over 30 years of experience in the Telecoms industry. During that time, he has held several senior management roles including Chief Commercial Officer of Inabox Group, CFO & Company Secretary of Aggregato Global, Managing Director of ACN Pacific and was a Non-Executive Director of the Telecoms Industry Ombudsman (TIO).

Iain has a BA Hons in Business from Robert Gordons University, Aberdeen, is a Chartered Management Accountant and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

Helen Fraser

General Counsel

Helen Fraser joined Symbio as its first in house counsel in 2012, bringing more than 20 years’ experience from prior legal, contract management and leadership roles mostly in the technology, telecommunications and aerospace industries, including at Accenture, Optus, Lucent Technologies, ERG and Hawker Pacific.

As General Counsel, Helen heads up the Legal and Compliance Team at Symbio and is also a committed executive sponsor of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Helen earned her Bachelor and Master of Laws from The University of Sydney and Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies - Indonesian) from the Australian National University. Helen is also a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) and a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC).

Ritsa Hime

Chief Product Officer

Ritsa Hime currently leads the Products Business Unit comprising Product Management, all Delivery functions, Marketing and Customer Experience. The Products Business Unit was formed in 2019 with clear objectives to deliver strategic, corporate and product initiatives with customer focus embedded throughout the innovation processes.

Ritsa has been with Symbio since early 2015 where she joined as Chief Operations Officer leading all the customer facing operations teams.

Ritsa has diverse experience in the telecommunications sector spanning more than 20 years in Operations, Sales and Engineering roles supported by a Degree in Electrical Engineering (Telec. Major). Prior to joining Symbio, Ritsa worked at Optus in the Wholesale and Satellite Division for over 8 years in two key roles.

Chris Last

Chief Financial Officer

Chris Last has had a successful and diverse career in finance, having specialised in chartered accounting, treasury, investor relations, corporate finance and senior finance disciplines over the past 30 years in Australia and overseas.

Prior to joining Symbio as their Chief Financial Officer in September 2019, he was Chief Financial Officer of NetComm Wireless, and before that, Chief Financial Officer of Blackmores. In addition, Mr Last was CFO and Company Secretary at the Heart Research Institute and has held senior roles at both Unilever Australasia and Richemont.

Chris holds a Chartered Management Accountancy qualification, is a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). In addition, he holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Management Services from the University of Warwick.

Andrew Tierney

Executive General Manager - Global

Andrew Tierney is Executive General Manager of TNZI, one of Symbio’s wholesale brands that powers the capabilities of communication providers around the world. Andrew joined TNZI in 2010 as their Head of Asia Pacific Sales before the TNZI business was acquired by Symbio in 2015.

Prior to joining Symbio, Andrew lived and worked in Europe and Asia throughout his 25-year career in international telecommunications, most of which was spent in a variety of management roles for Telecom New Zealand.

Currently a board member of the ITW Global Leaders Forum, Andrew holds a Diploma in Business Administration and Management from Victoria University of Wellington and is a graduate of the Leadership and Management Development Programme at the University of Waikato.
