Fighting Fraud with AI: Symbio’s Scam Shield Targets Voice and Messaging Fraud

November 12, 2024

Symbio Holdings Limited, part of the Aussie Broadband Group (ASX: ABB), has launched Scam Shield, an AI-driven scam detection system designed to assist service providers by providing an additional safeguard for voice and messaging traffic sent over the Symbio voice network.

In developing Scam Shield, Symbio took learnings from the domestic markets and regulatory environments it operates in and sought to develop a best-practise solution. Currently available in Australia, roll out into additional markets is planned.

AI-driven Scam Shield, continuously analyses customer traffic and responses, learning from the data to deliver increasingly accurate scam prediction. Privacy is upheld throughout and the inhouse developed AI learning model focuses on call patterning, not voice or messaging content and will provide customers with meaningful insights and actional data, to augment their own scam detection and mitigation systems.

This proactive approach reduces the detection time of scam like patterns and combined with Symbio's existing scam traceback procedures, ensures more robust identification of potential scam traffic.

Scam Shield has been developed to support compliance with the Australian Industry Code C661:2022 “Reducing Scam Calls and Scam SMS”, which mandates that telecommunications service providers monitor their networks for scam activities. By leveraging AI technology, Scam Shield offers a timely, data-based form of scam detection.

Symbio Scam Shield offers the following key benefits:

- Early alerts: Customers receive timely notifications of potential scam threats, enabling quick investigative action.

- Self-Learning: Customer feedback to traceback alerts used to better detect scam and support legitimate traffic.

- Enhanced safety: By predicting and identifying scam patterns in a timelier fashion, Scam Shield lowers the likelihood of scams reaching a larger number of targets.

“We are working to improve how we identify and reduce scam traffic,” said Dylan Brown, CEO of the Connect division of Symbio. “We frequently engage with our customers to better understand their traffic and their use cases. We know that a large number of genuine business use cases have similar high-frequency, short-duration call patterns similar to that of scam traffic that may be blocked by other carriers.  Symbio is focused on collaborating with our customers to better fight scam traffic together, as a trusted partner in the Asia-Pacific region.”
